Desert K-12 Campus
Our design for this K-12 campus in South India is rooted in a deep respect for local culture, the land, and the future of its youth. The campus is centered around the teaching practice of learning through play and outdoor exploration, inviting children to engage with hands-on experiences. Situated in a desert environment, the campus is carefully crafted to blend modern functionality with ancient, local building traditions, creating a space where students and educators can thrive sustainably.
Using natural building materials and ancient construction techniques, the buildings are not only energy-efficient but also in tune with the landscape. Special attention has been given to building placement and main passageways to optimize sun exposure, and passive heating and cooling techniques such as thick walls, courtyards, and open, shaded areas that encourage airflow.

The campus is designed with a focus on sustainability and environmental harmony, composed of two interconnected buildings, which house classrooms, administration offices, and a variety of communal learning spaces. Inspired by ancient, local building styles, the library is constructed using cob, a sustainable building material that is both thermally efficient and deeply rooted in the region’s history. Major walkways are set with open-air nodes to provide quiet havens for students and teachers throughout the day.
By merging local knowledge with modern design principles, the campus is a place where students can explore the world around them—both in the classroom and in nature.
